Advent Songs: Infant Holy, Infant Lowly | Day 8
Day 8 | Infant Holy, Infant Lowly
Scripture to Ponder: Luke 2:1-7 + Isaiah 5:2-4
It was strange that Emmanuel came to us as a child, even stranger that his first crib was a feeding trough, but the holy, lowly infant was even then the Lord of all. He was Lord of the oxen and cattle, the shepherds and wise men, his own parents, and the world. His appearance was not charming, he had no majesty or beauty on earth as he did in Heaven, and he died like the worst kind of criminal; however, he proved he was truly Lord of all, even death when he walked out of his own grave.
Infant Holy, Infant Lowly | Original Polish: Piotr Skarga - Translated by Edith Margaret Gellibrand Reed
Original: 16th Century – Translated: 1920
Infant holy, infant lowly,
for his bed a cattle stall;
oxen lowing, little knowing
Christ the babe is Lord of all.
Swift are winging angels singing,
nowells ringing, tidings bringing;
Christ the babe is Lord of all;
Christ the babe is Lord of all!
Flocks were sleeping, shepherds keeping
vigil till the morning new;
saw the glory, heard the story -
tidings of a gospel true.
Thus rejoicing, free from sorrow,
praises voicing, greet the morrow:
Christ the babe was born for you;
Christ the babe was born for you!
